Class Information
Students in the IB option programs (all programs except Australia) will earn the IB option IF they complete the required courses for their country of study with the appropriate grades.
How will classes be different?
Grade may be based on final exam only. Class meetings are not regular. Finals could be oral. Professors expect you to ask if you don't understand. No reminders of approaching deadlines. Possible chance to retake a final more than once.
Grades earned abroad are calculated into OSU and COB GPA. It's important to do well in classes on exchange!
Australia ... Austria ... Hong Kong ... Czech Republic ... Denmark ... Germany ... Norway ... Sweden ... Thailand
Australia
Students going to UTS need to read how to use the UTS Timetable Builder.
- Classes: Students must take a minimum of three classes (6 UTS credits each) in order to satisfy Australian visa regulations. Students cannot earn the IB option in Australia. Classes will satisfy BA core classes or option requirements.
- Grades: The Australian grading system uses high distinction, distinction, pass and no pass instead of letter grades.
- Registration: Students request classes as part of their visa paperwork. UTS will tells students what classes they will be allowed to take. Students then use the timetable builder to see if their desired schedule is possible. UTS then does the actual "registration" and puts students into a specific section of the class.
Austria
- Registration process: Austria's registration process seems different at first, but it is actually quite similar to our own. Instead of having students register in order of their last name as we do, Vienna University puts the classes into order and students register for each one on a specific day. Vienna University sends a letter with registration PIN & password. Students go online to fill out the school's application form and request classes. Registration itself happens on arrival. Expect this process to be time consuming and challenging!
- Grades: Austria uses a numbered grading system. The lower the number, the better your grade.
- Classes: Students must take a minimum of five classes in Austria in order to receive the IB option and satisfy Austrian visa regulations.
Hong Kong
- Grades: Hong Kong uses a letter grading system very similar to our own.
- Classes: Students at City University take four classes in order to receive the IB option. Some students choose to take an additional class in order to satisfy a remaining COB core requirement.
- Registration: Students request courses by filling out a course request form in the spring orientation class. This form and City University applications will all be sent to our contact, Angie Cheung. Registration happens when students arrive at the university.
Czech Republic
- Grades: The Czech Republic uses a letter grading system but it is not quite the same as our own.
- Classes: Students must take a minimum of four classes to satisfy the IB option requirements.
- Registration: Students register for classes when arrive at Mendel.
Denmark
Be aware that some students have found the finance class to be challenging. Students cannot cram for this exam the night before. They need to keep up with assignments and GO TO CLASS. Here are some sample syllabi: Corporate Finance, International Marketing and International Management.
- Grades: Denmark uses a numbered grading system. The higher the number, the better your grade.
- Classes: Students at Aarhus must take five classes to earn the IB option.
Germany
Laptop computers are a must for Germany. Students use their laptops in wireless classrooms to complete class assignments. If you do not have a laptop, it is possible to check one out from College of Business. Ask exchange coordinators in Bexell 214.
Bad Mergentheim uses a modular class structure. Classes are taught one or two at a time in an intensive two-four week period. Expect all classes to go from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day with a final exam on the last Friday morning of the second week. Students begin the next class on the following Monday.
- Classes: Students take five classes to earn the IB option.
- Registration: Students request classes when filling out the application form. Registration happens when students arrive in Germany.
Norway
- Grades: Norway uses a letter grading system, but it is not quite the same as our own.
- Classes: Students must take a minimum of four classes to earn the IB option.
- Registration: Course request forms are sent to us. Forms are completed in orientation class and then faxed back to Norway.
Sweden

Sweden uses a modular structure for its classes. In the first half of the term called Module 1 (October to November) , you will take *1-2 classes and complete them. In the second half of the term, Module 2 (November to December), students take the other *1-2 classes required. (*Sometimes a course can overlap modules.)
- Classes: Students at Lund take a total of four classes for the IB option. Classes from Module 1 and classes from Module 2 (see above).
- Grades: Sweden uses comments instead of letters for grades such as 'Very good', 'Good', etc. They also send the student's percentage which we use to figure out the equivalent OSU grade.
- Registration: Classes requested on Lund's application form as a kind of pre-registration. Lund will confirm requested courses in early June, but you are not yet registered until you arrive on campus and attend a registration meeting.
Thailand
Classes at Chulalongkorn are taught by professors from different countries and will have Thai students and exchange students from various parts of the world. Most classes have about 40-50 students. Chulalongkorn has a large campus with outdoor cafeterias, computer labs and libraries. Chulalongkorn requires that students wear school uniforms. Uniforms must be worn to class, in the computer lab and library or to do any official business with the school office.
- Classes: Students at Chulalongkorn take four classes for the IB option.
- Grades: Thailand uses a letter grading system very similar to our own.
- Registration: The COB sends Chulalongkorn a list of the courses that students should take for the IB option. Students do not register for classes until you arrive in Bangkok.
- School uniforms: Men: black slacks, white button-down shirt, school belt, black leather shoes. Women: black skirt, white shirt with silver buttons, school belt, Chulalongkorn pin, ankle-strap shoes.
